The Pepperberry In Full Bloom
Here in September in Australia's Wurundjeri Country, it's the start of the Wintoonth Wootanbaj season of regeneration. The native pepperberry which is the magic ingredient in our Cleanse and Soothe Perineal Spray is in full bloom and new growth is abound.
Here is an excerpt from farmer and writer Katherine Wilson on the real seasons of Australia -
Few Australian locations have four seasons in the northern hemisphere sense. Western Australia's Nyoongar Country has six, each representing the cycle of life. Yirrganydji traditional lands have five, and parts of Arnhem Land have three, each attuned to wetness, wind and humidity. Gariwerd Country, around Victoria's Grampians, has six seasons.
Each seasonal schema is specific to discrete cycles within regional landscapes and their attendant weather systems. To impose a one-size-fits-all classification onto this continent disregards millennia of First Nations knowledges. - from Eureka Street - Climate clues beyond the four seasons myth
Katherine has also kindly shared with us spectacular photos of the pepperberry from Yarra Valley Native as the first flowers of the season start showing up. "The leaves & fruit continue to serve as an antiseptic & anti-inflammatory - as they've served Palawa, Wurundjeri & Taungurung folk for millennia." - Yarra Valley Native
